Oates was happy to have the opportunity to come to Georgia to film Cockfighter as it gave him the opportunity to visit his ex-wife Teddy and their two children, who had recently relocated from Los Angeles to Atlanta. According to Oates' biographer Susan Compo, Teddy ended up getting a job at Turner Broadcasting. Their kids, one girl and one boy, both attended the University of Georgia.
