This picture shows the spurs that cockfighters attach to the legs of the fighting birds to make them more lethal. The SPCA showed up to protest the cruelty the animals would have to endure for the entertainment of movie goers and they were assured by the filmmakers that rubbers spurs were being used, as opposed to the steel spurs used in actual cockfights. The spurs may not have been real but the fighting certainly was.
The tension was partially defused when Governor Jimmy Carter came by the film set one afternoon, smiling and shaking hands all around and happy to see a movie being shot in his state.
Carter mentioned to director Monte Hellman that his family had been involved in cockfighting for several generations.
