Stone Mtn.

Here's a sprawling view of the Stone Mountain carving as it was originally intended to look. It was scaled back quite a bit by the time it was actually completed in 1970. Over at the New Georgia Encyclopedia, there's a good history of the mountain with a detailed history of the carving, including some details about the rise of the civil rights movement and the corresponding popularity among whites of Confederate symbolism.

Despite the troubling nature of this link, each time I visit Stone Mountain I'm happy to observe that black people apparently feel very comfortable in the park today, although surely many roll their eyes at the sight of the carving.
