This 1947 photo shows the intersection of McDonough Boulevard and Eric Street, not too far from the Federal Prison.   One of the neighborhood's longtime economic engines was General Motors' Fisher Body plant, located directly across the street from this house (scroll down for a photo), which opened in 1928 and closed on August 6, 1990.  The plant was the site of the still brand-new United Auto Workers first labor strike, in 1937.   Top photo courtesy of the Georgia State University Library Archives (File #LBGPNS7-167a).  Lower photo: January, 2013.     Google map

Across the street is the site of the old Lakewood General Motors plant.  The buildings have mostly been scraped away leaving only a massive concrete pad as a pretty substantial eyesore.
