More from the always worthwhile New Georgia Encyclopedia:

Maddox was "a popular governor with many of Georgia's citizens, paradoxically including many African Americans. He instituted such populist ideas as "Little People's Day," when average citizens could line up to meet with the governor twice a month at the Governor's Mansion on West Paces Ferry Drive in Buckhead."

Incidentally, Maddox was the first governor to live in the new governor's mansion, which officially opened on January 1, 1968.  Prior to that, the Georgia governor's mansion was located in the Ansley Park neighborhood of midtown.

One more fact of dubious value:  once, while perusing the Atlanta phone book in the early nineties, I saw that Lester Maddox's home address and phone number were listed.  He lived on Johnson Ferry Road in Cobb County.  I didn't call  him up or anything, but I clearly remember scratching my head and wondering how many other former governors would have their phone number and address listed in such a public database.  I'm guessing none.
