This has to be one of the all-time great Coca-Cola promotional pictures, showing the view looking south from the Tenth Street bridge over what was then known as the Northeast Expressway. Today, of course, it's usually referred to as the Downtown Connector, which is where I-75 and I-85 come together on their trip through the heart of town. The photo was taken in 1950 or thereabouts, probably sometime before this section of the Expressway was officially opened. The brick buildings seen on the right were part of O'Keefe High School, which opened as a junior high school in 1923. Shortly thereafter it became a full-fledged high school until 1971, when it was converted to a middle school for several years before closing for good in 1979. The building in the foreground was the gym. Both buildings have long since been incorporated into the Georgia Tech campus. Image via the Atlanta History Center. Thanks to Dan Morrison for bringing it to my attention. Google mapHOME | DOWNTOWN | HOUSES AND APARTMENTS | COMMERCIAL BLDGS. | MISCELLANEOUS LOCATIONS | LINKS | NEXT PHOTO
