The filming of Poor Pretty Eddie was completed around Thanksgiving 1973, but the movie was not officially released until the spring of 1975.  In July of 1974 it had a premiere at the Atlanta International Film Festival, where Todd Hunter, director of the festival, made clear the contempt he felt for the film.  As reported by Robert Saye in this Red And Black article, "disgusting" was one of the least derogatory terms he used to describe Poor Pretty Eddie.   A bit further into the article we learn that the film critic for the Athens Banner Herald complained that it made Georgians look like morons.

In response to a flurry of negative criticism, director Rich Robinson returned to Hollywood to re-cut the movie.  Beechwood Cinema owner Sol Abrams looked forward to getting the opportunity to show the finished product.  During the filming of the movie, the Beechwood Cinema was used to screen rushes.
