800 Cherokee Avenue SE The building with the columns is The Cyclorama, which houses the a colossal painting also known as The Cyclorama. The painting depicts the battlefield action of the Battle of Atlanta, fought on July 22, 1864 during the United States' Civil War. The battle was fought in part near the present intersection of Moreland Avenue and I-20. In an effort to achieve as much historical accuracy as possible, the team of talented artists responsible for the painting interviewed numerous Confederate and Union survivors of the battle. The Cyclorama was first displayed in public in Detroit in 1887. Standing 42 feet tall and 358 feet in circumference, it is the largest painting in the country. The New Georgia Encyclopedia has much more information on this topic if you're interested. Date: 1953 GSU FILE: N04-15_a |
