The New Georgia Encyclopedia reports that the Bell Bomber Plant in Marietta came to life shortly after the beginning of World War II in 1943 and churned out an amazing 663 B-29 bombers for the U.S. Army between '43 and the war's end in 1945. At its peak, the plant employed over 28,000 people, a pretty astonishing figure.
Following World War II, the plant sat empty until 1951 when it re-opened as Lockheed-Georgia, later known as Lockheed-Martin.
