Interstate 285, the perimeter highway that circles Atlanta, was officially opened to considerable fanfare on October 15, 1969. Governor Lester Maddox presided over the gala affair and was photographed after hopping onto the hood of a car that was driven through a paper barrier to commemorate the big event. A while back "Reader Ed" sent in a batch of photos of I-285 taken in 1973. You can go here to check them out and see how much things have changed with I-285 since those early days.
