Peachtree St. at Harris St., 1968

This 1968 photo shows the view looking north along Peachtree Street toward its intersection with Harris Street, which is now known as John Portman Boulevard. This shot is one of the best that I've found that shows how dramatically the area on the north side of Baker Street has been reshaped in recent decades. Baker Street can be found at the second traffic light in the photo and today, as always you must bend slightly to the right to stay northbound on Peachtree Street. In 1968, you could simply go straight and find yourself on West Peachtree Street. The street-scape there has now been reconfigured to include a small park, Hardy Ivy Park, named for one of Atlanta's earliest white settlers. These days, the northbound traveler must pass Hardy Ivy Park and make a 90 degree left hand turn to get onto West Peachtree Street and then, after a few dozen yards, a similar right turn must be made to stay on the street.
